Many lovers are drawn to the old love tree in Nymphenburg Palace Park along the left side of the baroque park grounds. The tree is littered with countless vows of love left by loved-up couples. If the weather's nice, a trip along the palace canal in an authentic Venetian gondola is an unforgettable experience; it's the perfect setting for couples who want to take the next step by making a very special marriage proposal.
When the weather is nice, we recommend the rooftop bar of the Louis Hotel at Viktualienmarkt – from up here, you can enjoy a unique view of Munich's old town, especially in summer. The Blue Spa wellness area with restaurant on the top floor of the Hotel Bayerischer Hof also offers a unique view of the Frauenkirche and the city centre. You can also enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view from the roof terrace of the Hotel Deutsche Eiche, a traditional restaurant and meeting place for the LGTBQ* scene. The Mandarin Oriental Hotel also scores with one of the most beautiful rooftop bars in the city: on the 8th floor, the Munich Sushi Club spoils its guests with Japanese-Peruvian cuisine and a fantastic view.
Even in the middle of Munich's bustling city centre, there are a few quiet spots to be found: for example, the Dichtergarten (Poets' Garden) on Galeriestraße between the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry and the Prinz-Carl-Palais, or the Kabinettsgarten (Cabinet Garden), which borders the Allerheiligen-Hofkirche (All Saints' Court Church) in the Residenz. The city offers plenty of alternative sights where you can enjoy peace and quiet and time together.
Cast off! The MS Utting, a former excursion and wedding steamship on the Ammersee (lake), has been left stranded on a railway bridge in Munich's Schlachthofviertel district. The ship has been completely converted and now attracts visitors with coffee, drinks, food trucks and cultural offerings such as readings and concerts. In summer, you can sit on deck and watch the stunning sunset, while in winter you can cosy up with mulled wine and pastries. If you like to take to the oars yourself and spend some time out on the water as a couple, you can rent a rowing boat at the Olympiasee or at the Kleinhesseloher See in the Englischer Garten (park).
A carriage ride through the Englischer Garten, starting at the Chinesischer Turm (Chinese Tower), is a very special experience. Kutscherei Holzmann was established in 1945 as the only carriage company in Munich that is allowed to travel through the English Garden and pedestrian zone. What could be more romantic than a horse and carriage ride through one of the world's largest parks? If you prefer a quieter pace, discover the northern part of the English Garden together.
You can enjoy a very romantic visit to the Bavarian Public Observatory in Munich, one of the largest of its kind in Germany. Discover the infinite nature of the universe! We also have a special gift idea for lovers, as you can even dedicate a star to your partner. Especially in the cold season, when it gets dark even earlier, you can get closer to the Munich starry sky in a gondola of the Munich Ferris wheel Umadum. The last ride and closing time is at 7.30 pm.
If you'd like to eat under the light of the moon, you should visit the Restaurant Marais Sois in Westend district and book a table in the dark room with a moon lamp on the wall. The French restaurant serves haute cuisine and has been considered one of the finest places in Munich Westend for many years. If you can't get a table here, the small bistro Coup de Coeur, run by Munich chef Mona John, is also very romantic and French! Or try the Spanish-French restaurant LeBerLu on Baldeplatz: sitting in the romantic courtyard here, you'll soon find yourself dreaming of Paris!
The Dorfbad Tannermühl (village baths) offers a tremendous amount of togetherness and romance in the district of Bayrischzell (accessible via the Bayerische Oberlandbahn public transport network). Its “very private spa” is the perfect place to enjoy some special time together in a unique atmosphere. The village baths lie at the bottom of the Wendelstein mountain in the beautiful setting of Bayrischzell. Its location at the foot of an eight-metre high waterfall is particularly impressive. Those looking for relaxation for two in Munich will find it at My Spa. The spa areas offer absolute privacy with their own sauna, whirlpool and personal relaxation room. Even with drinks and snacks on request.
Hotel Lux in the old town offers a guaranteed romantic evening with its red velvet sofas in cosy, private seating areas. Those who have dined well can quickly order a glass of bubbly via the champagne bell at each table. The bar also offers a wide range of cocktail classics! Les Les Fleurs du Mal on the first floor of Schumann's is also very cosy: here you can sit at a long table on red carpet and watch the hustle and bustle on the ground floor from a slightly secluded spot.
A sensual combination of food and music can be enjoyed at the "Dinner & Concert" event against the romantic backdrop of Schloss Nymphenburg (palace). You can look forward to a 3-course meal at the Schlosswirtschaft Schwaige restaurant, followed by a palace concert in the Hubertussaal. A wonderful combination for a guaranteed unforgettable evening! The hall is currently undergoing renovation work, which is expected to continue until mid-2026.
When the weather is nice, we recommend a picnic by the Isar River or in the Rosengarten (park), where thousands of roses bloom, especially in summer. The small park in Untergiesing also features other themed gardens, such as the lilac, fragrance and touch gardens. But the Englischer Garten, Westpark and the steps at Königsplatz also offer a great backdrop for a picnic for two!
Open-air cinemas like the “Kino, Mond & Sterne” in the Westpark and the cinema by the Olympic Lake attract lots of visitors, especially in summer. In the Astor Cinema Lounge at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof, lovers can take a seat in comfortable lounge sofas that invite you to cuddle up together. The cosy extra-wide cinema armchairs with footstool in the Gloria Palast are also the perfect place to enjoy a nice evening at the cinema for two. Both cinemas also offer the option of having food and drinks served directly to your seat.
Munich offers numerous romantic restaurants where you can spend a lovely evening for two. Popular choices include Chez Fritz in Haidhausen, the young Michelin-starred restaurant Gabelspiel in Giesing, and Birreria e Trattoria Seerose next to the Englischer Garten. Pure romance in a real castle by candlelight with a 3- or 5-course menu is also available at Schlosswirtschaft Schwaige.
“Romeo and Juliet” is arguably Shakespeare's most famous love story and has even left its mark on Munich. A statue of Julia Capulet can be found right behind the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) between Marienplatz (main square) and the Heilig-Geist-Kirche (church). The original statue of Juliet was a gift from our twin city of Verona. According to the local superstition, touching the statue will bring you luck in love.
The Blutenburg castle complex with chapel in the west of Munich still impressively shows the old structures of the moated castle from the 15th century and offers a beautiful backdrop during a walk. Incidentally, you can also get married in the castle chapel. You can find more beautiful walking routes in our winter walks or walks in the Munich area.
The Munich-Nymphenburg Botanical Garden is a green paradise and worth a visit at any time of year: beautiful exotic butterflies fly freely in the aquatic plant house from December to March – an unusual idea for a date. In spring and summer, simply let yourself be carried away by the scent of the flowering plants and stroll through the extensive park.
Roseninsel on Starnberger See (lake), with its small island villa known as the ‘Casino’, is worth a visit not only when the roses are in bloom in summer. From the beginning of May to mid-October, the ferry takes just five minutes to reach the island from Glockensteg in Feldafing. And every year, there are also a few dates in summer when you can get married here!
No matter where you start your walk along the Isar out of town, you will eventually reach the Großhesseloher Bridge, a railway bridge with lots of love locks hanging on its railings. At lunchtime, you can grab a bite to eat at the Konsum Kiosk on the Isar Canal or stop off for a leisurely meal at the Waldwirtschaft Wawi restaurant. On the way back, why not take a detour to Tierpark Hellabrunn (zoo)?
Sushi, vegan, Bavarian classics or would you prefer pizza and pasta? Depending on their tastes, lovers can attend a cookery course together and be inspired by the different flavour sensations. If you prefer to leave the cooking to others, book a tasting tour of the Viktualienmarkt!
With all the tips for lovers, one would like to go one step further and dedicate oneself to the wedding preparations. Even long-time married couples are increasingly renewing their vows. In the Alte Gärtnerei in Taufkirchen, four landscaped greenhouses with magnificent plants and flowers are available for wedding celebrations or a wedding ceremony, depending on the number of guests.
